HERB RITTS EXHIBITION OPENING AT CAMERA WORK BERLIN FRI MAY 13TH 2011
Last Friday after attending the Ellen Von Unwerth opening at Contributed, we went for a bit to the afterparty at Soho House. Their, I was introduced to Benjamin Jager who is is one of the founding members of CAMERA WORK, renowned Berlin photography gallery which features exhibtion on fashion and vintage photographers works. Benjamin invited me to attend Friday night opening of thier of CAMERA WORK's new Herb Ritts exhibition.
CAMERA WORK which is is located on Kantstraße in West Berlin near Cafe Paris, was the furthest I have yet to venture into the West. The gallery was converted from a large 1920s car garage and transformed into a beautiful exhibition space.
From the first images in the Ritts show, which show Jack Nicholson in full Joker make up from Tim Burtons BATMAN, and a young and fresh Christy Turlington, I was reminded of how influential and iconic many of Ritts's images where in the late 1980s and 90s. Along with celebrity portraits, there are several series of images with 1990s super model staples such as Cindy Crawford and Stephanie Seymour which transcend pop imagery and venture into the world of Surrealist and avant guard photography of 1920s and 30s. These images were my favorites.
If you are in Berlin and you have chance, stop by the gallery and check out the show. If not you can see some pics here below.
