Marc Newson: Transport Exhibition NYC
PSFK attended a preview of London based designer Marc Newson’s Transport exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery in New York City. The show presents the full range of commissioned vehicles and mobility projects designed by Newson. The types of projects represented is nearly as wide as the scale. At one end is the EADS Astrium Space Plane prototype designed to take tourists into space and at the other is the Zvezdochka trainer for Nike meant to be used by Russian cosmonauts on extended stay at the International Space Station.
The exhibition is also the premier of Newson’s latest project, a speedboat designed for the iconic Italian boat-maker Riva. The limited edition boat (only 22 will be produced) is called the Aquariva and is a mix of Newson’s streamlined style with some of the character of the original Aquariva from the 1960’s.
Also part of the show is the 021c concept car Newson designed for Ford back in 1999. We’ve mentioned before that this vehicle is still striking today and still looks fantastic in person.
We spoke with Marc and asked if after eleven years he was thinking of having a go at designing another car. He said he is definitely interested but would have to have an automaker to partner with for a project. He also talked about the potential he sees for fuel cells to power cars in the future instead of electricity. He said that the problem with electric vehicles is the power still gets generated by dirty sources like coal fired power plants. Designing some sort of advanced fuel cell vehicle is a project he’d like to work on.
